The micro:bit Model Hovercraft Competition 2024-2025 was successfully held on May 17, 2025, featuring the participation of 38 teams from primary and secondary schools across Hong Kong. These talented students demonstrated their creativity and skills by creating innovative hovercraft models and engaging in three exciting challenges.
We were honored to have Dr Clifford Choy Sze-tsan, Assistant Professor of School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as our esteemed guest of honor for the award ceremony. His presence provided the students with valuable encouragement and recognition. We would also like to take the chance to extend our sincere gratitude to HKSYC&IA Chan Nam Chong Memorial College for generously offering their venue and assistance, which greatly contributed to the success of the event!
The three all-around challenges
The competition challenges the teams to design a hovercraft with enhanced propulsion for improving thrust and speed, directional control for effective steering and navigation, and an effective lift system to ensure the hovercraft floats and maintains stability. The competition comprised three major challenges: the Speed Challenge, the Rescue Challenge, and the Cargo Lifter Challenge. Students showcased their capabilities in these challenges. The Speed Challenge assessed the stability and speed of the hovercraft as students adjusted the balance and propeller speed to achieve the shortest distance traveled in a straight line at the highest speed. The Cargo Lifter Challenge evaluated the hovercraft's load-carrying capacity, requiring students to transport objects without them falling off during movement and reach the finish line with the heaviest load. The Rescue Challenge tested the hovercraft's agility as teams navigated through various obstacles, including fence barriers and sandpaper, while scoring points at six different rescue locations.
Students Vote for their Favorite Designs
The competition also celebrated the artistic aspects of STEAM learning. Prior to the event, students participated in a "My Favorite Hovercraft" design contest on Facebook, showcasing their creative and artistic abilities. Through online voting and on-site displays, the judges were captivated by the imaginative designs presented. The design competition undoubtedly added a lot of artistic flair to the entire event!
Putting STEAM Knowledge into Practice
The competition provided students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-time challenges. They learned to utilize the wireless communication feature of the micro:bit to remotely control the hovercraft by connecting it with a game console. After testing the hovercraft's performance, students modified the programme to enhance its capabilities. This involved understanding the airflow directions generated by the propellers and correctly installing them to effectively control the hovercraft. Through this competition, students not only gained knowledge about hovercraft and programming but also developed important skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity. Their technical expertise and innovative strategies were evident, reflecting their talent and ingenuity.
Trumptech remains committed to organizing similar competitions and events in the future, providing students with more opportunities for practical application and innovation. By fostering the development of STEAM education in schools, we aim to cultivate students' digital literacy and technical abilities, preparing them to become future innovators and leaders.
